Join REI for an amazing experience as we paddle out onto the Monterey Bay in search of whales! This educational adventure is timed to coincide with the migration of Humpback Whales off Moss Landing. We use stable tandem sea kayaks with low instructor/student ratios to guarantee fun! Come experience the beauty of the open ocean and the chance to see a whale from a safe distance. We will launch from Moss Landing in the early hours while the seas and winds are relatively calm. Basic paddle instruction will be provided. While we can't guarantee an encounter with a whale we will most likely see other marine life such as seals sea lions otters and dolphins from a respectful distance in their natural environment! Previous kayaking experience is mandatory to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all involved. For questions regarding your skill level prior to this tour please give us a call and be sure to check out our introductory paddling courses. The tour will likely involve paddling 5-8 miles possibly against wind and current. Please note this environment has rolling waves which can lead to motion sickness. Why do we use tandem kayaks? Because of the environment in which this class operates rolling waves swells and duration we use tandem kayaks for stability and group management. Therefore we cannot allow the use of personal single kayaks. Why is our minimum age 18? We have a minimum age of 18 for this tour because of the strenuous nature of this class.
